In second place was the Japanese brand's CX-5, which was also ranked as Australia's overall best-selling SUV. 

Holdens did not even make the top 25 among Australian private buyers, despite formerly being a popular choice among families

The Mazda3 was Australia's top selling car among private buyers in 2018, according to internal motoring figures

In the third and fourth place were the Toyota Corolla and Hilux respectively, news.com.au reported. 

In fifth place was the Mitsubishi Triton – a dual-cab more affordable than the Hilux, where the majority of sales came from run-out deals. 

The Mazda CX-3, the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV 4 took 6th, 7th and 8th place proving that SUVs were still a firm favourite with buyers. 

The more compact Volkswagen Golf and the Hyundai i30 were ranked 9th and 10th respectively.
