Caravan Carports and RV Carports, A Guide to Choosing the Right One.
Posted by Hugh Frame on
A ‘normal’ carport is usually too low for caravan storage so today we look at caravan carports and RV carports, a guide to choosing the right one. When it comes to protecting your valuable assets like your caravan or RV, having a reliable carport is essential. However, not all carports are created equal, especially when it comes to accommodating taller vehicles like caravans and RVs. In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of choosing the right type of carport for your needs. We focus on why caravan carports must be higher than regular carports. We also look at why off-the-shelf or budget options may not be sufficient.
The Height Factor: Why Caravan Carports Must Be Higher
One key factor to consider when selecting a carport for your caravan is the height of the structure. Caravans and RVs are typically taller than standard vehicles. They require a higher clearance to comfortably park and manoeuvre them in and out of the carport. Many caravans and RV’s have an air conditioning unit on the roof. This must also be considered when calculating the necessary clearance height. Opting for a carport specifically designed to accommodate the height of your caravan ensures that you won't have to worry about clearance issues and potential damage to your vehicle.

While budget carports may be tempting due to their cost-effectiveness, it is almost impossible to find one that has over 2.4m in clearance. The off-the-shelf Lysaght range comes with 3m poles. However,600mm needs to be buried in-ground, so you have a 2.4m clearance only. In low wind areas like
Victoria and most of NSW, you can purchase baseplates for Lysaght carports. This means you can have clearance of the full pole length of 3m. You can view the Lysaght single carport here. It is also available as a Double Flat roof carport here. Car Covers and Shelter currently offer the least expensive Lysaght carports in Australia with a price match if you can find one cheaper.
When it comes to protecting your caravan or RV, investing in a custom-designed carport is the way to go. You can tailor custom-designed carports to fit the dimensions of your vehicle perfectly. This provides optimal protection against the elements and ensures a secure parking space with the necessary height to store your prized possession.
It is also possible to have the roof of your carport designed strong enough to take the weight of an extra 20kg per square metre. This allows fore the safe installation of solar panels on the roof. It’s a great ides to use that additional roof space you are adding to your property.
Skillion, Gable, Dutch Gable, or Hip Roof Carports: The Top Choices for Caravan Carports
When it comes to choosing the roof style for your caravan carport, there are several options to consider. Skillion roofs are the popular choice for any carport over 2.8m clearance. The high Skillion roof also gives a good- looking contemporary look.
Gable roofs offer a classic and timeless aesthetic, ideal for blending in with existing architectural styles. For those seeking a combination of the two, Dutch gable roofs provide a unique and eye-catching roof design that adds a touch of sophistication to any property. Note that while these roof profiles look fantastic, they can look slightly out of place on a 3m clearance as the roof is likely to rise by another 2-3 metres. This is why we always recommend the Skillion, flat roof carport design for tall carports.
Cantilever Carports by Cantaport – A Popular Choice
We have many customers who have installed a Cantaport, Cantilever Carport to store their RV or Caravan. The Cantaport only has legs on one side which means there can be easy access through side doors without any worry of crashing them against posts. The Cantaport is also an extremely elegant design and does not look out of place in any setting. The poles supplied with a Cantaport are 3m long but using the recommended steel sleeves for installation means you have a low-end clearance of 3m. Most caravans are sufficient with this height, but they can be raised an additional 400mm by raising the steel sleeves.
Cantaport manufactures precision-made Cantilever Carports in Japan. No drilling or cutting is necessary for installation and so are an ideal DIY product. Cantaports come in a variety of sizes and can also be invisibly joined together to make double or multi-bay covered areas.
Portable Carports
Portable carports are supplied with high walls to fit most caravans and RV's. Transportable
carports are made for temporary use only. If you need shelter for your van for a couple of years only, a portable carport could be your best solution.
